Unfortunately, over the last few weeks we have seen a dramatic increase in snake bite patients.

As the weather warms up, snakes become more active to seek out prey and fill their empty bellies. This combined with the natural curiosity and hunting instincts of our furry friends causes a dangerous situation for our pets.

Pets can survive a snake bite if treated quickly, so recognising the symptoms and quick action is vital for your pet. Here are 4 simple tips to keep your pets safe this snake season:

🐍 Know the symptoms:
Signs such as sudden weakness followed by collapsing, shaking or twitching of the muscles, vomiting, dilated pupils, blood in urine or paralysis can all be symptoms of a snake bite.

🐍 Seek immediate veterinary assistance:
If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, bring them into clinic immediately. Pets are more likely to survive a snake bite if treated promptly. If possible, give us a call on the way so we can prepare to treat as soon as you arrive.

🐍 Administer emergency treatment before transport to the vet:
Keeping your pet calm and as still as possible can help minimise the amount of venom absorbed via the blood stream.

🐍 Take precautions:
The majority of bite cases occur simply due to pets being in the wrong place at the wrong time, however there are some ways to reduce the likelihood of your pets coming into contact with a slithery fiend.
Keeping your yard tidy, grass short, cleaning up spilled food, fruit or birdseed and walking your pet on a leash when out and about are just a few ways to minimise the risk of a snake bite.
